The Ryobi laser level uses a small battery-powered motor which creates a vacuum on the bottom of its rubber base causing a suction effect in order to stick to the wall or other surfaces. It is capable of sticking to painted and unpainted drywall, wall paper and other non-porous surfaces. This is not your run of the mill laser level, as it does not use any sort of pins or require nails or adhesive of any kind.
